With Microsoft Dynamics CRM, you can split the various server roles (such as the Organization Web Service, Web Application Server, and Help Server) onto different servers to distribute the application load. Splitting the Microsoft Dynamics CRM server roles to different computers can be appropriate for customers with large or complex deployments. For email, Microsoft Dynamics CRM provides integration with Microsoft Exchange Server, but also supports any Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) email system for incoming mail and any Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) email system for outgoing mail. Finally, Microsoft Dynamics CRM supports a wide variety of automation, such as command-line install and Terminal Services. The concept of entities is easily one of the most important concepts to understand before you can customize Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Some people use the term objects to describe the concept of entities. Microsoft Dynamics CRM uses solutions to bundle and group system customizations in a single package. Solutions can contain many components, such as entities, dashboards, reports, security roles, and more. By using solutions, you can move your set of customizations

from one deployment to another more easily. For example, you can use solutions to move customizations from development to staging to a production environment. In addition, by defining a solution as managed you can limit the customizations allowed within a solution. Although you can always edit the original managed solution on the system you created it on, installing a managed solution on a different Microsoft Dynamics CRM system will:

Prevent the addition or removal of solution components. Prevent someone from exporting the managed solution. Delete all of its solution components if the managed solution is uninstalled.

Lead A potential customer that can be qualified or disqualified as a sales opportunity. When you qualify (convert) a lead, Microsoft Dynamics CRM can automatically create a related account, contact, and opportunity record. Contact A person who interacts with your organization. Contacts can be customers, but you can also track other types of contacts, such as partners, suppliers, vendors, and so on. Account A business or organization that interacts with your company. You can link an account s employees as contacts related to the account. In addition, you can create parent and child relationships between accounts to reflect divisions or departments within a single large account. Case A customer service incident your organization wants to track and manage until it s successfully resolved. Activity An action or follow-up item, such as tasks, phone calls, letters, and email messages. You can link activities to an entity to specify what the follow-up item regards. Note Short text annotations that you can link to various entities throughout Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Opportunity A potential sale for your organization.
